A Git-Native Azure DevOps Test Plans Alternative

TestChimp is a git-native alternative to Azure DevOps Test Plans: plans live as Markdown and tests as Playwright code in your own repo, with two-way git sync and pull request review. Agent-written tests get human verification and verified badges per scenario (Verified Tests), so agents do not grade their own test changes. Azure DevOps test cases are work items in your Azure DevOps organization, not files in the repo.

Why teams leave Azure DevOps Test Plans for a git-native stack

The lead difference is human governance. With TestChimp, a person inspects steps, screen captures and code, then stamps a verified badge per linked scenario. When an agent later patches a verified test, the badge can go stale until someone re-verifies it (on by default; by default only when reported confidence is below 80). Release views show which tests a person checked.

Azure DevOps Test Plans is a strong fit when the whole delivery stack already lives in Azure DevOps (Boards, Repos, Pipelines). Creating and managing test plans needs the Basic + Test Plans access level (listed at $52/user/month on Microsoft's Azure DevOps pricing page, checked 19 October 2026). Stakeholder access gets exploratory testing; Basic gets web-based test execution from Test Runner and running tests from the Kanban board, but not creating or managing test plans. Test cases remain Azure Boards work items, not Markdown files next to your product code.

TestChimp is for teams (including startups using AI coding agents) that want:

  • Plans as Markdown in git with PR review.
  • Standard Playwright / Mobilewright tests owned in the repo.
  • Verified Tests as the accountability layer for agent-authored coverage.
  • Exit-safe files: only Verified Tests status is platform-only.

See Verified Tests and Test planning as code.

When to stay on Azure DevOps Test Plans

  • Your organization is standardized on Azure DevOps for Boards, Repos and Pipelines, and QA must stay inside that permission and work-item model.
  • Stakeholders need free exploratory testing access, and Basic users only need to execute (not author) plans.
  • Compliance or process mandates that tests are Azure Boards work items with the same fields and queries as other work.
  • You already pay for Basic + Test Plans seats and do not need Markdown plans in git or Verified Tests for agent-written automation.
  • Reporting and dashboards must stay inside Azure DevOps Analytics without a second control plane.

Migrating from Azure DevOps Test Plans

TestChimp documents direct plan importers for TestRail, Jira and Linear only. There is no direct Azure DevOps Test Plans importer in the docs.

Practical path:

  1. Export or copy the cases you still need from Azure DevOps (work item queries, Excel/CSV export if your org uses it, or manual copy). Confirm the export path in Microsoft's docs for your process template.
  2. Recreate priority journeys as Markdown stories and scenarios in TestChimp, or import Jira / Linear stories if that is where requirements already live (Import from external sources).
  3. Connect GitHub or GitLab, map plans/ and tests folders, run /testchimp init.
  4. Bring existing Playwright suites with /testchimp import. Azure Pipelines can still run npx playwright test with the TestChimp reporter; TestChimp does not require leaving Azure Pipelines.
  5. Link tests to scenarios, verify the ones that matter, and keep Azure Test Plans available for historical audit until coverage overlaps.

Do not claim a one-click Azure Test Plans import; it is not documented.

Frequently asked questions

What is a git-native alternative to Azure DevOps Test Plans?

TestChimp. Plans and Playwright tests live as files in your git repo with two-way sync, and Verified Tests records which agent-written tests a person checked. Azure DevOps keeps test cases as work items in the organization.

How much do Azure DevOps Test Plans cost?

Microsoft lists the Basic + Test Plans access level at $52/user/month (checked 19 October 2026 on the Azure DevOps Services pricing page). Stakeholder and Basic access levels cover less of the create/manage surface. Confirm current numbers on Microsoft's site.

Who verifies the tests?

In TestChimp, a project member stamps Verified Tests after inspecting the run and code. Azure DevOps relies on work item history and your own review process; it does not publish a Verified Tests equivalent for agent-authored Playwright suites.

Can I move Azure Test Plans cases into TestChimp automatically?

No documented direct importer. Export or recreate plans as Markdown, optionally import Jira/Linear stories, and import automation with /testchimp import.

Does TestChimp work with Azure Pipelines?

Yes for running tests: any CI that runs Playwright works, including Azure Pipelines. Git sync for plans today is documented for GitHub and GitLab.

What is TestChimp's SOC 2 status?

SOC 2 Type 2 audit is in progress (not certified yet).
