A Git-Native Xray Alternative
TestChimp is a git-native alternative to Xray (Test Management for Jira): plans live as Markdown and tests as Playwright code in your own repo, with two-way git sync and pull request review. Agent-written tests get human verification and verified badges per scenario (Verified Tests), so agents do not grade their own test changes. Xray keeps tests, plans and executions as Jira issues.

Why teams move from Xray to git-native plans and tests
The lead difference is human governance. With TestChimp, a person inspects steps, screen captures and code, then stamps a verified badge per linked scenario. When an agent later patches a verified test, the badge can go stale until someone re-verifies it (on by default; by default only when reported confidence is below 80). Release views show which tests a person checked.
Xray is a Jira app: tests, test plans and executions are Jira issues, paid through the Atlassian Marketplace by Jira user tier (not only Xray users). Standard includes AI Test Case Generation, AI Test Prioritization and BDD support. Advanced adds AI Test Script Generation, more storage and API. Xray also supports BDD/Cucumber feature files (import/export), which is a fair strength for teams already living in Jira and Gherkin.
TestChimp is for engineering teams (including startups using AI coding agents) that want plans and Playwright tests as files in git, reviewed like product code, with Verified Tests as the accountability layer. You can keep Jira for tickets and still move test intent into Markdown.

Short comparison
Competitor facts from the Atlassian Marketplace listing and Xray Cloud docs, checked 19 October 2026. Exact Xray dollar prices are not quoted here because they are tiered by total Jira users.
| TestChimp | Xray | |
|---|---|---|
| Where test cases live | Markdown and Playwright in your repo | Jira issues |
| Git-native | Yes, two-way sync | No (issues in Jira; BDD feature files can import/export) |
| Human governance | Verified badges per scenario; stale on agent patch of a verified test | Jira workflows, permissions and issue history |
| BDD / Gherkin | Markdown scenarios; Playwright/Mobilewright code | BDD support; Cucumber feature file import/export |
| Pricing | Team $420/month, Growth $667/month, billed annually | Priced through the Atlassian Marketplace by Jira user tier; Standard and Advanced editions; Enterprise is a separate listing |
| Best fit | Agent-driven teams that want plans and tests in git | Jira-centric QA orgs that want tests as issues |

When to stay on Xray
- Your organization mandates Jira-native test cases and Xray workflows for audit or tooling standardization.
- QA lives entirely in Jira issue views, dashboards and Marketplace apps, and leaving that surface is not acceptable.
- You rely on Xray's BDD/Cucumber feature file import/export as the primary authoring path.
- Pricing by Jira user tier is already paid for, and you do not need Markdown plans in git or Verified Tests for agent-written Playwright suites.
- Advanced or Enterprise Xray features (extra AI script generation, storage, API, or Enterprise-only capabilities) are required by your Atlassian admins.
Migrating from Xray
TestChimp documents direct plan importers for TestRail, Jira and Linear only. There is no direct Xray importer in the docs.
Practical path:
- Export what you need from Xray (for example BDD/Cucumber feature files if you use them, or issue exports). Confirm the path in Xray's own docs.
- Import Jira issues as TestChimp user stories when stories already live in Jira (Import from external sources). Recreate Xray-only test cases as Markdown scenarios (UI or Author Plans).
- Connect the repo, map folders, run
/testchimp init. - Bring existing Playwright suites with
/testchimp import. - Link tests to scenarios with
#TS-nannotations, verify the ones that matter, and keep Xray available for historical Jira audit until coverage overlaps.
Do not assume an automatic Xray-to-TestChimp case migration; it is not documented.
Frequently asked questions
What is a git-native alternative to Xray?
TestChimp. Plans are Markdown and tests are Playwright in your own repo, with two-way sync and Verified Tests for human review of agent-written coverage. Xray stores tests as Jira issues.
How much does Xray cost?
Xray is priced through the Atlassian Marketplace by Jira user tier. Exact dollar amounts depend on your site's user count and edition (Standard, Advanced, or Enterprise listing). Check the Marketplace listing for current figures.
Who verifies the tests?
In TestChimp, a project member stamps Verified Tests after inspecting the run and code. Xray uses Jira workflows and issue history; it does not publish a Verified Tests equivalent for agent-authored Playwright suites in your repo.
Can I move Xray tests to TestChimp automatically?
There is no documented direct Xray importer. Export from Xray, import related Jira stories if applicable, recreate scenarios as Markdown, and import automation with /testchimp import.
Does TestChimp replace Jira?
No. Many teams keep Jira for issue tracking and use TestChimp for git-native plans, SmartTests and coverage. See Issue trackers vs TestChimp test planning.
What is TestChimp's SOC 2 status?
SOC 2 Type 2 audit is in progress (not certified yet).
